Antarctica Is the Largest Desert
A fifth-standard boy corrected my geography. Another family used one plain AI question to find an opportunity for their son's book.
Antarctica is the largest desert on Earth.
I did not know this. More embarrassingly, a fifth-standard boy had to tell me.
On 23 August, Riyan asked the children who play with my daughter near our house, “What is the biggest desert?” I answered Sahara with the confidence of a man returning an old school textbook to the examiner. Riyan said Antarctica. He had learned it through ChatGPT.
For a moment, my entire education seemed to need a software update.
Riyan was right. A desert is defined by how little precipitation it receives, not by heat, sand, camels or cacti. Antarctica is the largest desert; the Sahara is the largest hot desert. My mistake was not that I had forgotten a fact. I had remembered the picture too well. Somewhere in school, “desert” had become a camel standing in sand, and the image had defeated the definition.
A fifth-standard boy had carried the answer from ChatGPT to his gang, and then from his gang to me. I found that funny. Also slightly embarrassing.
The question Barani’s parents asked
Eight days earlier, we went to Chettinadu Public School to attend our daughter’s Independence Day celebration. There, I heard another story that began with a simple question.
During the programme, the chief guests presented Barani, a Class 12 student and the school’s head boy, with an award for an achievement from a few weeks earlier. He had written a collection of short stories titled 100 Years Back and taken part in a Guinness World Records event where authors signed their own published books together.
His parents later told us more about the book. Their pride was wonderfully unguarded.
A child had not merely written stories. His work had left the house.
The event was real, and larger than I expected. On 26 July 2026, 1,572 people signed their own books simultaneously in Chennai. Guinness names ESN Publications and the London Organisation of Skills Development as the record holders. Barani’s achievement was to arrive there as a published young author with a book of his own.
I asked his parents the obvious question: how did they discover an opportunity like this?

That is all. They had no publishing vocabulary, no well-connected uncle, and no knowledge of award calendars, festivals or record attempts. They had a fact, a parent’s ambition and a question stated plainly.
According to his parents, the suggestions led them towards the Chennai event. AI did not write Barani’s book, submit the application, verify the organiser or take the family to Chennai. It did something smaller and, at the right moment, decisive: it gave them the name of a door they did not know existed.
For years, opportunity had a discovery tax. Talent was not enough. You also needed the vocabulary to search, the network to ask, or the luck to receive the correct WhatsApp forward before the deadline. Information could be public and still remain practically private.
Search engines reduced that tax, but search still expected you to know the category. AI lets you begin one step earlier, with the messy truth of your situation: my son wrote a book; where can it go?
That first useful question no longer requires insider language.
A lost phone and a stubborn printer
Barani’s parents were looking for an opportunity. Ben Zhang was looking for his phone.
At the end of July, Ben Zhang lost his work phone somewhere in an office. Find My was unavailable because the phone was managed through MDM, so he asked Claude what else he could try.
Claude suggested using the phone’s Bluetooth signal and helped him build a command-line meter. Zhang walked around the office watching the number move closer to zero as the signal became stronger. That warmer-colder trail eventually led him to the phone.
He later published findphone as open-source software.
Bluetooth signal strength is messy indoors. Walls, metal cabinets and even people can distort it, so the tool cannot point to a location like GPS. It gives you something simpler: keep moving, and watch whether you are getting warmer.
I had my own version at home with our HP Smart Tank printer. The printer was connected to the house’s 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, while the Mac mini stayed on Ethernet. AI helped me inspect the network and confirm that both devices were still on the same home LAN. Once that was clear, the Mac could discover the printer through AirPrint and IPP, along with its network scanner.
I could have stopped after printing one test page. Instead, I used AI to add a printer manager to my personal application. One screen now shows the printer and scanner, their status and recent jobs, and lets me print, scan or cancel after explicit confirmation.
In both cases, documentation was not the problem. It was everywhere. The missing part was somebody sitting beside you and saying, “Try this next.”
The things we do not know to ask
You cannot ask an unknown unknown by name. You can only make it easier to stumble into one: question what feels obvious, listen when somebody sees it differently, and follow the fact that does not fit. AI gives us one more place to ask, and one more chance to be surprised.
Sometimes the answer points a family towards Chennai. Sometimes it tells a fifth-standard boy that the largest desert in the world is made of ice.
